Extending a network with a Wireless Bridge

TimeIPS systems require a network connection. Sometimes, getting a network connection where you would like to place a clock is not practical. A wireless bridge allows a network to be extended to places where wires can't reach.

NOTE: A network bridge is an extension of network infrastructure. Network products offered by TimeIPS and information in this article are designed to help TimeIPS customers find a solution to their needs. TimeIPS technical support can assist with network and bridge configuration, but does not directly support networks. If you need assistance setting up your network, please seek the assistance of a local network consultant.

A wireless bridge provides a convenient way to extend your network to remote parts of a building, or even a completely separate building. By using common 802.11b/g standards, a wireless bridge can be installed for a reasonable price by anyone with basic network skills.

For a standard installation, you will need:

  • 802.11b/g Access point ( 802.11n can also be used if needed.)
  • Network bridge, such as the TimeIPS BRIDGE-WRT product.

For a building to building installation (or long range installation) you will also need:

  • Outdoor directional antennas (e.g., Yagis) and mounts which can greatly improve the range and speed of the bridge.
  • Lightening arrestors (optional).
  • RF cable (for antennas, if needed)
  • RF connectors (for antennas, if needed)
NOTE: For outdoor building-to-building connections, a direct line of sight between antennas and minimum clearance above any obstacles are required for best results.
