Relay Control Catch Diode Installation

Like a snubber capacitor, a catch diode (sometimes called a freewheel diode, suppressor diode, clamp diode or flyback diode) is used to protect the TimeIPS relay controller from damage when used with inductive loads. The catch diode is more effective at protecting the TimeIPS relay controller than the snubber capacitor BUT it is ONLY used for DC loads.

To protect the contacts in your relay controller, please connect the catch diode directly across the wires going to the load, as shown below. Unlike the snubber capacitor, polarity IS important with the catch diode. The end of the catch diode with the black tip must be connected to the positive wire.

The catch diode can be used on any DC load, up to 30V.
