Ethernet Extenders for TimeIPS

TimeIPS Network Clocks connect using standard Ethernet cables. Ethernet standards allow cables with lengths up to 100m (328 feet). In most cases this is more than enough length, but there are situations in very large buildings, or between buildings, where this is insufficient.

To connect TimeIPS at a remote location, there are several options to consider:

  • If there's space, place an Ethernet switch in the middle of the run (or at approximately 300  foot intervals for longer runs).  If power is not available in the middle, POE can supply power for one switch from each direction.
  • Use a VDSL Ethernet Extender.  These are easy to install and allow connection from LAN -> VDSL -> LAN where the VDSL segment is up to 1000m (approx 3280 feet) and uses standard twisted pairs, such as network cable or phone lines.  One example of a kit for this is the "StarTech 110VDSLEXT 10/100 VDSL Ethernet Extender Kit over Single Pair Wire – 1km"
  • Use Fiber.  Ethernet switches with fiber capacity and fiber connections are available for lengths up to a mile or more.
  • Place a separate Internet connection. If there's no way to get a cable between buildings, consider Internet service at the second building to facilitate connection.
  • Use wireless cell-network bridge.  In remote or mobile locations, devices exist that allow TimeIPS clocks to bridge to the Internet over the cell-phone network.
